Diamond Falls Out of Setting, What to Do?

The most common reason diamonds end up getting knocked out of their settings is because the ring has been bumped or hit off of something. Sometimes even the slightest bump can cause this since not all settings are as sturdy as others.

Even diamonds held in prong or bezel settings, which are supposed to be the most secure settings, can be knocked out. This is because over time the metal will wear and the setting can become less durable. When the prongs become worn, they are more likely to bend which will allow the stone to easily fall out.

Additional reasons for you diamond falling out include:

• Extreme Polishing: While the occasional cleaning is necessary, you want to avoid having your ring polished every day or too frequently. This can speed up the wear and tear process by a significant amount which will lead to losing your stones more easily.

• Re-Sizing: Whether it is an increase or a decrease in size, adjusting by more than 2 sizes in either direction will cause the prongs to change as well, which can be the reason the diamond falls out of setting. While the jeweler will take precautions to reduce the risk of the stones falling out, this is never a guarantee.

Which Diamonds Fall Out More Easily?

While some settings offer more security, others are more susceptible to being easily damaged and will not hold the stone as well. Pave-setting, invisible setting and even channel settings are some of the most common settings that stones will fall out of easily. These types of setting are not as secure as prong settings and the stones are often lost without any notice.

• If you find that your diamond is a little loose, you’ll want to take you ring to a jeweler as soon as possible to have it tightened. This also goes for any of the prongs that may be worn, bent or broken.

• Yellow golf is one of the least durable metals you can choose for the prongs, so if possible go with white gold or platinum prongs.

• Invisible set diamonds can be shaken loose, so you want to refrain from wearing your ring during any rigorous activity as the stones can easily pop out.

• Inlaid stones can also pop out quite easily when the glue holding them is too old and weakened.

• Keeping your ring clean can help you better spot any damage or wear prior to a diamond falls out of setting and prevent it from happening. As mentioned above you, however, do not want to excessively clean your ring as this will speed up the wear and tear on the ring and more easily loosen the prongs.

• You want to limit the use of ultrasonic cleaners since these devices can easily loosen the stones of the ring. So always check your stones before and after placing the ring in an ultrasonic cleaner. Instead, a toothbrush, soap and water can be just as effective while not causing possible lose easily.

Sometimes it is not always a tragedy when one of your diamonds comes loose or falls out, especially if it happens while at the jewelry store, in which condition most jewelers can reset and replace the stones for around $50. The jewelry stores will usually have on-site repair centers to quickly replace stone that fall out during a cleaning or polishing session, and may even offer a discount if they feel they were responsible for the stone falling out. While this can be an inconvenience, it is actually a much better than losing the stone outside of the jewelry store.

If the diamond falls out of setting while you are outside of the jewelry store, you’ll want to try your best to locate it and keep it secure to a piece of tape on paper. If you cannot locate it, then you’ll need to pick a new stone and the price will reflect the type of diamond you choose for the resetting.
